That’s all ya got?

On the nights when my husband has a work commitment and my kids are settled in bed, I indulge in one of my guilty pleasures…reality TV.  So tonight as I settled into an episode of some housewives somewhere I was abruptly brought back to my reality by a commercial trying to sell me on the idea that high fructose corn syrup is just like cane sugar.  According to the ad: “Whether it’s corn sugar or cane sugar, sugar is sugar.  Your body can’t tell the difference.”

But there is a difference.  What the Corn Refiners Association fails to tell us in the ad is that HFCS is made from GMO corn, that its refining process is different than sugar and studies reveal that the body does respond to it differently.   Ah the joys of special interest groups and marketing.

Then it dawned on me.  Their strongest pitch to turn their public image around is to equate their product with refined cane sugar.  I think that says it all…
